Marlene Dietrich was plucked out of a Berlin chorus line in 1929 to star in the smoldering Lola-Lola in The Blue Angel.  As her good friend Ernest Hemingway once remarked, "If she had nothing but her voice, she could break your heart with it.  But she also has that beautiful body and the timeless loveliness of her face."  In a publicity photo, she is wearing an impressive cognac diamond ring.
